Throwback Thursday: Demi Lovato 07-27-09

Throwback Thursday Time! In the summer of 2009 Demi Lovato toured the US to promote her latest album Here We Go Again. It was announced that American Idol alum David Archuleta and Hollywood Records recording artist Jordan Pruitt would serve as Demi’s opening acts. There was no way I was missing this tour. Although I ended up going to four of the 44 shows in North America, my favorite was the July 27, 2009 stop at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center in Ohio.

I arrived to the Wolstein Center around 3:30pm. I had a VIP ticket package which included access to Demi’s soundcheck party, crowd free merchandise shopping and a meet and greet opportunity. As I entered the arena Demi’s band was practicing on stage. They played a few songs before Demi arrived. She sang “This Is Me” from the movie Camp Rock. She sounded great, especially for a soundcheck. After answering a few questions from the audience, Demi performed “Two Worlds Collide” from her debut album Don’t Forget. After the soundcheck we were escorted into a room where Demi was waiting to take pictures with all of us. It was really cool meeting Demi. She was super sweet and had the best laugh. It wasn’t long after the meet and greet before the show began. I was super excited to see the opening act.

Jordan Pruitt opened the entire show with her hit song “Jump to the Rhythm.” As soon as she stepped on stage the crowd got out of their seats and began to dance. Though I’ve seen Jordan in concert before, this was the first tour she where she was backed by a live band. I was loving Jordan’s new sound. The Georgia native had a five song set. She sang a brand new track titled “Don’t Loose Yourself” which was written by The Jonas Brothers. Always a crowd favorite, “Outside Looking In” was performed next. It was cool to hear the entire crowd singing along. Jordan wrapped up her set with “My Shoes” and “One Love,” two of her latest singles from the album Permission to Fly. I loved watching Jordan perform in a big arena. Her vocals were flawless the entire set. She left the stage with a big smile on her face as she waved to the audience.

David Archuleta was up next. He sang songs form his self-titled debut album. He had a pretty big following after becoming the American Idol Season Seven runner-up. Like Jordan, David was backed by a live band. After sing a few songs he sat down at a keyboard to accompany himself. He sang a cover of One Republic’s “Apologize.” His voice was strong. David finished his set with his single “Crush,” which peaked at number two on Billboard’s Hot 100. He put on a great show, but I was super excited for the next performer.

As Demi Lovato took the stage the crowd went wild. She kicked of her set with “La La Land.” Demi was on fire. Her voice was stronger than ever. I loved the stage setup. Demi performed a variety of songs form her first and second albums. She even sang the theme song to her hit Disney Channel show Sonny with a Chance. One of my favorite performances of the night was when Demi brought a little girl on stage to sing “This is Me.” The look on the little girls face was priceless.

Like David, Demi sat down at a piano to perform a few of her slower songs. She even covered Aretha Franklin’s hit “Natural Woman.” Two of my favorite songs performed back to back: “Remember December” and “Here We Go Again.” I love the power Demi shows vocally in both songs. She soon left the stage, but it wasn’t long before she returned wearing a pink dress for her encore performance. Demi performed “Don’t Forget” and “Get Back” to close the show.

The entire tour was an experience I’ll never forget. It was cool meeting Demi and seeing Jordan again. I wish I could relive this tour every summer. Concerts always create the best memories.
